Abbott Galaher SeaMan paddling race
The Keauhou Canoe Club will be hosting the 20th annual Abbott Galaher SeaMan Race for OC1 & OC2 canoes, V-1 Rudderless canoes, Surfskis and SUP today.
Registration will open at Keauhou Canoe Club’s halau at 7:30 a.m., with the race meeting at 8:45 a.m. and race start for both courses at 9 a.m.
Originated by the late Abbott Galaher in 1997, this preseason paddling event has been held annually to raise funds and food for the Hawaii Island Food Basket. A reduced entry fee of $15 is offered to paddlers who contribute a 6-pack of canned food or an additional $10 for the Food Basket.
Both the 3-mile short course and 5-mile long course will run straight out to sea and back to the finish line inside Keauhou Bay.

LavaKids Family Fun Runs
LavaKids, in partnership with Club Rehab, will host its Family Fun Runs on Saturday, Dec. 16 at 7 a.m. starting at the West Hawaii Civic Center. This is a free event and open to all ages.
The guest speaker will be Claudia Kane, LavaKids Director and member of the Ironman World Championship events team. She will give some tips for eating healthy and staying active during the holidays.
Registration will take place at 7 a.m. followed by a keiki dash at 7:45 a.m.. The 1-mile run/walk, 2-mile run/walk and 5k run/walk will begin at 7:55 a.m.
Games and supervision will be provided for keiki during the 5k for parents wanting to participate.

Jingle Bell Beach Run
Hawaii Sport Events presents the 13th annual Jingle Bell Beach Run on Sunday, Dec. 17 at Coconut Grove Marketplace.
Start time for the Christmas themed event is 7:30 a.m. and will feature a 5K and Santa’s Keiki Dash.
This year’s charity will benefit the Kiwanis Club, a non-profit organization dedicated toward changing the lives of children in need through their involvement with youth programs and meaningful community activities on the Big Island.
Awards will be given to the top three in the following categories: overall, five-year age groups, and best Christmas costumes.
Entry fee for the 5K is $35 until Dec. 15. There will be no registration for the 5K on race day. Santa’s Keiki Dash is free to children ages six and under.

Elks Hoop Shoot
Boys and girls between the ages of 8-13 as of April 1, 2018 are invited to participate in the Elks Hoop Shoot on Saturday, Dec. 16 at Kealakehe High School.
Registration begins at 9 a.m. with competition starting at 10 a.m. Age groups are 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13.
The highest scores in each age group may advance through four tiers of competition to qualify for the National Finals in Chicago, Illinois on April, 21.
All kids who reside in West Hawaii are invited to participate. It is not necessary to sign up in advance, just come to the gym and compete. The event is free.

Baseball youth clinic and showcase
The Big Island Wood Bat Academy and Trosky Baseball will be holding a youth clinic and showcase Dec. 15-17. There will be numerous colleges in attendance along with pro scouts from the Baltimore Orioles, Milwaukee Brewers, Colorado Rockies, Chicago Cubs and others. Nine and Wine golf tournament
Makalei Golf Club is hosting a Nine and Wine tournament on Saturday, Dec. 16 in support of the Hawaii Island Food Bank.
The nine-hole, two-person scramble format tournament will have a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Check-in begins at 12:30 p.m. and cost is $40 per person.
Mulligans will be sold for $5 or two canned goods to benefit the Hawaii Island Food Bank (maximum of four mulligans per team).

KCAA T-Ball/Pitchball registration
The Kohala Community Athletic Association is currently accepting free registration for T-Ball/pitchball and boys basketball through Dec. 18. Registration can be done online at KCAA.online.
T-Ball/pitchball practice for girls and boys ages 5-8 begins in early January and games start mid-January and run through the end of February at Kamehameha Park.
Basketball practice for boys ages 9-11 begins in early January and games begin in mid-January and run through early March at Hisaoka Gym.

KSC youth sailing days
Kona Sailing Club’s junior sailors invite other youth to join them on the water for sailing fun and learning over winter break.
Youth sailing days are scheduled for Dec 26-29. There will be land and water activities each day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Honokohau Harbor.
Participants should be 12 years old or over or intermediate sailors over the age of 10.
Attendees must be able to swim, be comfortable on a boat and in the water.
US Sailing Certified Instructors lead the program and Big Island Sailing Foundation provides the boats and sailing vests.
All participants need to be current KSC members ($20 first year and $10 thereafter).
Fee for four days is $130. Scholarships and discounts are available.
There is an early registration discount if signed up before Dec. 20.

The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation will host its annual Waiakea ‘Uka Vulcan Baseball Clinic on Saturday, Jan. 13 from 9-11:30 a.m. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. The clinic is open to children ages 7-13.

The Palapala Kupuna is looking for men and woman 55 and older interested in playing in the Hawaii County Kupuna Softball League starting in late January.
